What is a Sound Bath?

A sound bath is a meditative practice and can be easier than other meditative practices because it doesn’t require a lot of discipline or patience to learn how to do it — all you have to do is listen. Relaxation is the main byproduct of this practice. Sound baths can trigger a phenomenon called “sound healing.” A sound bath healing event will involve lying on your back for up to 90 minutes, so wear comfortable clothing and bring a pillow and blanket.

The sound bath practitioner will use musical techniques and several instruments to create soothing, overlapping vibrations. These vibrations lead you deeper into a state of contemplation or relaxation, shutting off your body’s fight-or-flight reflex.

At the end of a session, your provider will guide you back to a feeling of awareness before concluding the sound bath and wishing you well on your journey.

Sound Bath Instruments

Instruments that make deep, resonating vibrations are popular instruments used for sound baths. These include:

  • crystal bowls
  • Tibetan singing bowls
  • bells
  • gongs

Practitioners say that the benefits of sound baths include:

  • Deepening relaxation.
  • Lowering stress and anxiety.
  • Improving mood and well-being.
  • Improving sleep.
  • Heightening focus and energy.
  • A feeling of rejuvenation.
